I love a good Catch-22, and the world of day jobs is rife with them. You can't get an office job without office experience, which only comes from having the darn job, which you can't get because you don't have experience... and on and on until you get a fierce headache and need a glass of water.
The performing world can be just as frustrating. Opera companies won't hire you unless you have experience singing with... opera companies. Casting directors are hesitant to take a chance on an untested actress, no matter how gorgeous. Meanwhile, malls are filled with pissed-off thesps grumpily sizing racks of chinos and wondering, How the hell am I supposed to get experience when no one will hire me?
I smell another community theater convert! (singsong)
Just as 'volunteer'-based performing troupes welcome experience-hungry actors and singers, open mike-nights beckon musicians into their waiting arms. The popularity of this barroom (and coffee house) staple in recent years means that singer-songwriters can get valuable exposure without angling for acceptance from hiring-types. Says Wikipedia: "These shows provide an opportunity for people to gain experience performing to a live audience without having to go through the process of getting normal music gigs, which is very difficult to do without experience of live performance."
Finding a great open mike in your area can be a headache all it's own, but thankfully Paul Roub has made the job a whole lot easier. This singer/songwriter/guitarist decided to create a complete listing of open mikes across the US and Canada with his ingenious website openmikes.org. Browse hundreds of of listings, or submit one of your own, and enjoy a great photo gallery of grinning, passionate performers hugging their guitars and singing their hearts out.
I spell 'experience' T-h-a-n-k-y-o-u-p-a-u-l-r-o-u-b-f-o-r-o-p-e-n-m-i-k-e-l-i-s-t-i-n-g-s-i-c-a-n-u-s-e. Today, open mike night at the local watering hole. Tomorrow, the world! Goodbye, day job! Hello, MTV Cribs!
